Do I Still Need to Have Oral Prophylaxis Despite Brushing Daily?

Even if you brush and floss your teeth or even use mouthwash, there are still bacteria-causing residue left in between your teeth and gum line. Get rid of the hardened food deposits by visiting your dentist for a regular check-up and oral prophylaxis.

Oral prophylaxis is a dental procedure commonly known as teeth cleaning. Here are the things included in a prophylaxis procedure:

  • thorough brushing and flossing of the teeth
  • removal of tartar
  • subgingival cleaning
  • polishing
  • root planing
  • x-ray
  • examination and medication of other possible diseases

Oral prophylaxis includes examination of the entire oral cavity. Aside from preventing the teeth from decaying, your dentist can also screen and evaluate your teeth for signs of periodontitis or other gum problems. Gum diseases may not be fully treated or reversed fully. Prophylaxis however can slow down its destructive progress. Through prophylaxis, dentists can also determine early signs of more serious medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney problem or oral cancer. Prophylaxis, as simple as it may sound, can be used as a preventive measure for chronic illnesses.

How often should I have oral prophylaxis?

For patients who have good oral hygiene, it is recommended to schedule regular visits to the dentist at least every six months. For those who suffer from periodontitis or other teeth and gum problem, more frequent visits may be recommended. Dental appointments may change over time depending on your oral health needs. Speak to your dentist ask for your options. Frequent visits to your dentist gives you that peace of mind. That is why it is important to find a dentist you are at ease with so you are comfortable during your consults.
