Recognizing The Dental Crown Types For Each Dental Need

dental crown is a tooth cap that dentists place on top of a patient’s broken or missing tooth. It is a durable tooth prosthetic that may last for more than 15 years with proper care. Most dentists recommend this option as it’s easy to maintain and it resembles an ideal tooth in appearance. Each patient has distinct dental needs that may need different types of crown material.

Dental crown types

Steel crowns

dental crown procedure depends on the type of component that is used. Steel crowns are premade and don’t need the patient’s teeth impression. They are commonly useful for protecting a primary tooth, that’s why it’s preferable for kids. This type of tooth cap covers the entire tooth and keeps it in place. When the primary tooth starts to fall off to make way for the permanent tooth, the dental crown naturally goes with it. Generally, the steel tooth cap is best for children since it won’t need multiple visits to the dentist. It’s also cost-effective compared to other preventive dental treatments available.

Metal

Some dental crown procedures might need dental caps that are made of metal. These components are mostly infused with gold or silver. They are considered as the most durable type of teeth caps as they could withstand the forces of chewing. It rarely breaks or even chips so it’s pretty much worth it considering its cost. The only drawback with this type of dental crown is its appearance. Needless to say, it’s best for restoring molars where it’s hard to see.

Resin

Resin tooth caps are the least expensive among the crown materials. Although it’s easily accessible, it might not be a good option if you’re looking for a long-lasting solution. Unfortunately, even with proper care, it’s still susceptible to fracture. It may imitate a natural tooth colour but not so much of its function. Some dental crown procedures may find this material useful as a temporary use. Then, will just be replaced with a more durable type.

Ceramic or porcelain

Crowns made of ceramic or porcelain are quite famous to patients as they’re durable and aesthetically pleasant. Unlike the other materials, these are non-porous and do not stain from certain kinds of foods and drinks. Furthermore, this type may be used for either the backbites or the front teeth.

There are already plenty of options available in the market to cater to your distinct dental needs. If you want to make sure you get the most suitable deal for your smile, always consult your Toronto dentist.
